I went to the NEW START SCOTLAND exhibition at the SECC Glasgow last Friday. Certainly an exhibition worthwhile visiting especially if you are new to ‘How to start a business’ I saw lots of interesting exhibitors who can help you succeed in business and one common theme was networking, networking, networking…..
What is networking?
The definition from Wikipedia states:
Business networking is a marketing method by which business opportunities are created through networks of like-minded business people.
So what is it all about? Networking is certainly a very important part for the success of business. You might be familiar with the phrase: It’s not what you know it’s who you know!
The aim of business networking is to increase business or generate business opportunities. This can be achieved by developing a relationship with a new client, learning a new business skill, establishing connection with like minded people or finding support and motivation. A good networking group will provide you with information, ideas and help. To be a good networker you should develop good listening skills. Networking is a give and take scenario. Be prepared and willing to help and in return you can expect to be helped and this will hopefully form the base for a mutually beneficial relationship.
But be aware of the increasing associations, clubs, organisation who are seeking your memberships for their Business Networking Groups and Events and can eat up lots of time and money without real result. Be selective before attending or even joining a new Networking Club and do your research.
The next event I will attend is the Women in Management Network in Stirling on Thursday 22nd April with the topic ‘Making it up as you go along: Living by your own rules and succeeding at work’ presented by Fiona Logan from Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park Authority.
I might see you there.
